Your Product Design Checklist: What Every Brand Needs Before Manufacturing
Use Nearshore’s Product Design Checklist to prepare your product for manufacturing. Learn what goes into design and development — and how to create a factory-ready product.
Before a product ever reaches the production line, it has to be ready for it.
This phase - what we call Design & Development - bridges the gap between your idea and a factory’s ability to make it. A well-planned design saves time, reduces costly mistakes, and ensures your factory can quote and produce accurately.
At Nearshore, we help brands navigate this critical stage with access to technical designers, vetted factories, and expert guidance across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe.
Why Design & Development Matters
Factories work best when you’re clear about what you want to produce. A factory can only quote or sample based on the information you provide — and if your product details are incomplete or unclear, expect delays, miscommunication, and expensive revisions.
A solid product design gives you:
- Accurate production pricing and timelines
- Fewer mistakes in sampling and manufacturing
- Greater control over cost and materials
- Confidence that your idea is truly production-ready
For some products, design costs may be minimal or even zero. For others — especially items involving tooling, molds, or complex materials — the design and development process can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.
Average design & development costs:
- Apparel, jewelry, leather goods: $500–$2,000 per style
- Complex molded or mechanical products: can exceed $10,000+ depending on complexity
Your Product Design & Development Checklist
Use this checklist to make sure your design is complete — before you approach factories or request quotes.
1. Product Research & Planning
- Compare your design to competitors
- Confirm your product’s purpose, target audience, and use cases
- Decide what makes your product stand out — materials, features, sustainability, or price
2. Branding & Customer Experience
- Include clear branding or logo placement (if applicable)
- Offer enough color or style options to appeal to your customer
- Choose packaging that reflects your brand — or plan to source it later
3. Cost, Efficiency & Factory Collaboration
- Ask factories: “What would make this more cost-effective?”
- Review material efficiency - minimize waste where possible
- Confirm all files, molds, and tooling required for production
- Ensure you retain ownership of your design and digital files
4. Compliance, Testing & Labeling
- Understand required product testing for your category (e.g., safety, chemical, or textile compliance)
- Check optional or voluntary testing for claims like “eco-friendly” or “hypoallergenic”
- Confirm labeling and care instructions meet regional regulations
5. Technical Design
- Create a tech pack or spec sheet - the blueprint your factory will follow
- Include product dimensions, measurements, and tolerances
- Define all materials, trims, and finishes
- Attach reference images or sketches
(Need help? Nearshore’s technical designers can create spec sheets and tech packs for you.)
6. Prototyping & Testing
- Make a final prototype or sample
- Test it — use, wear, wash, or stress-test the product
- Gather feedback from users and make adjustments before production
- Ensure protective packaging for shipping and storage
The Value of a Factory-Ready Design
Factories quote and produce faster when your product details are clear. A strong design file or tech pack tells them exactly what to make, how to make it, and what standards it needs to meet.
Without one, you risk:
- Incorrect pricing
- Longer sampling timelines
- Product inconsistencies
- Miscommunication between your team and suppliers
By investing time upfront, you’ll save weeks (and thousands of dollars) later in production.
